Summary:

The feet driven Pedal Pump SCPP was developed to fetch drink water or water to be of use for agricultural irrigation. It’s made of concrete, iron, plastics and wood. Workshops on location are able to fabricate the Swiss Concrete Pedal Pump. Favourable characteristics are the huge discharge flow (80 litres per minute from 0 to 3 meters), high efficiency (max. 65%), economical fabrication and nearly no need of maintenance.

After a tide disaster along the gulf of Bengale, the water contains a high amount of salt. This aggravates the loss by rust of the piston.

The Indian school Don Bosco SERI is able to produce the SCPP in a good quality. Don Bosco is also able to optimise the production process.

Goal:

In consideration of the production at Don Bosco and the salty water, the piston has to be improved. These shall include the protection against rust and production optimisation.

Planned
Activities:

An alternative solution for the piston shall be developed. The piston should conform the requirements for the production at Don Bosco SERI. These should contain the protection against loss by rust and production optimisation.

Expected
Results:

A long-time partnership with Don Bosco SERI is expected. That does mean the serial production and regionally distribution of the SCPP. Until 2006 about 2480 pumps (I.e. about 4960 pistons) will be ready for a field test of the pistons. If the results from these tests are positive, the production of the pistons and therefore the pumps can be increased.

Don Bosco SERI
Don Bosco is a school with about 350 students. The level equates the level of a Swiss vocational school. The school has their own classrooms and workshops.
