Cross Flow Turbine MHPP: Structural and mechanical strength.

In the last years under the GTZ Mini Hydro Power Project Indonesia about 100 cross flow turbines were locally design and manufactured. These hydro turbines are design with different runner width and runner diameter.

The T14 turbine is already manufactured with variable diameters (D= 100mm, D= 150mm, D=225mm und D=400mm). Exploiting and operation experience are encouraging.
There are turbine runners with much larger dimensions in the design stage. (D= 400, D=500, D=600 und D=800mm). Already 3 units (Diameter D=800) are in the realisation phase. (Power plant JUGU). According to pressure head and power the turbine runners have to be equipped with additional supporting discs. An other limitation is the drive disc demanding reinforced supports and additional couplings.

For a practical and useful standardization it is really necessary to study the dimensioning and design limits carefully and reliable. With the actual rough calculations it is impossible to use the whole potential design range, because the security margins have to be fixed at quite high levels.
A detailed calculation with exact and reliable results with the necessary CAE – software tools and the according know-how is very important. This can not be achieved with the possibilities of the project in Indonesia.
First steps have been undertaken. But it is absolutely necessary to undertake a reliable assessment with specialized know – how to gain a database, that makes it possible to establish useful and confidential guidelines for the design of the new turbines with larger dimensions and higher power output.
