Presentation of Swiss Research Partnership Projects
Swiss Universities for Applied Sciences and Swisscontact
A development promotion program backed by SDC
This is a Subproject of "Project for a Training Course: Subject: Identification of the potential of development of agro-forestry in south western Tanzania" by Yves Hausser
Comparative analysis of trophy hunting tourism and game viewing tourism: assessment of the economical and ecological impacts – southwesten Tanzania.
Summary of Project Activities Implemented
The purpose of the research is to investigate the economy of faunistic resources and will concentrate particularly on trophy hunting tourism and game viewing tourism. It will help to assess whether these two activities are competitive or complementary and to identify possible solutions to increase complementarity between them.
Goal
The aim is to provide a tool to support the decision making process regarding natural resources management.
Results Expected vs. Results Achieved by Swiss Technical University and by Partner
This research revealed the synergies and conflicts on access to resources between the central state, hunting companies and local populations. This information contributes to the mutual understanding of the different stakeholders which is of critical relevance for a more integrated exploitation of natural resources. The results on the compatibility of hunting and vision tourism seem to show a difficult coexistence. The difficulties of the coexistence of these activities have however well been identified, and ways to overcome them proposed.
Validation of Results by Swiss Technical University and by Partner
The diploma research of miss Fesselet obtained the mark of 4.6 (over 6) at the University of applied Sciences of Western Switzerland and afforded her to obtain her degree. The results of the research have been useful for the NGO ADAP and the other Tanzanian partner (TAWIRI) which both found valuable information for their activities.
Sustainability / Outlook
The research carried out by Miss Fesselet is a first assessment of fauna resources, poaching, human-wildlife conflicts and tourism activities in the region of Inyonga. It opens the way to further investigations in these domains, that will be carried out by the two partners of the research project, ADAP and Tawiri, which followed with interest the work of miss Fesselet. One of the major outputs of this work is to have contributed in the networking of different Tanzanian and Swiss institutions concerned with wildlife management.
