Presentation of Swiss Research Partnership Projects
Swiss Universities for Applied Sciences and Swisscontact
A development promotion program backed by SDC
This is a Subproject of "Project for a Training Course: Subject: Identification of the potential of development of agro-forestry in south western Tanzania" by Yves Hausser
Project Name
Participation in Natural Resources Management: The Role of Communities, Tanzania
Summary of Project Activities Implemented
Activities are evaluated for the whole duration of the project. Then, most of them will be completed in the second phase. Here figures what has been realised:
- Bibliographical inventory
- 4 case studies (3 UASWS students, 1 IUP student, 1 SUA Student)
- 2 training seminars for Tanzanian partners: “Introduction to GIS” and “Governance of Natural Resources & Protected Areas” (dates and location?)
- 1 GIS database realised
- Development of institutional partnerships (IUCN-TGER-TILCEPA, SUA, TNRF, GTZ, USAID, UNDP, CEDT)
- 2 international presentations of the results (GIS Day, 2007; SCB, 2007)?
Goal
The objective of the project is to acquire a better understanding of the complex interactions which determine the success or failure of participatory management of natural resources in Tanzania. In builds on exchanges of experiences, knowledge and of lessons learned during the implementation of the applied research project, in partnership with Tanzanian institutions.

Results Expected
vs.
Results Achieved by Swiss Technical University and by Partner
1. CCAs assessment: partially achieved, data collection is still in the process regarding determinant factors of success, conflict resolution mechanisms, economic opportunities, CCAs characterisation, Best Practices identification, CBNRM assessment regarding poverty alleviation.
2. Data reporting: data collected and analysed has been integrated in training and has been reported at the national level for the TNRF and at the international level in a survey for the TILCEPA - IUCN, as well as in a presentation for the 21st Conference of the Society for Conservation Biology (Date?), as well as during the GIS Day organised by the UNDP (Date).
3. Capacity building with Tanzanian partners: This has been realised through monitoring of cases realised by EIL students (in their diploma research) and through 2 training seminars: “Introduction to GIS” and “Governance of Natural Resources and Protected Areas”
4. Development of Partnerships: collaboration has been strengthened with national institutions (TAWIRI, SUA and TNRF) and new synergies have been developed with international institutions: IUCN (TILCEPA and TGER), GTZ, UNDP, USAID – Africare, CEDT. Future partnerships are also being developed: The UASWS had some exchanges with institutions in Burkina Faso (IUCN regional office, CIRAD, ULB and FFEM) concerning a potential future collaboration on CBNRM issues in eastern Burkina Faso.
Validation of Results by Swiss Technical University and by Partner
The UASWS students’ case studies and diploma research have been validated by the UASWS or IUP and some elements will be integrated in the course: “Conservation and Development in Sub-Saharan Africa” provided by the Natural Resource Dept. of the UASWS.
On the side of the partners, the recent development of collaborations shows that the UASWS’ competencies are now recognised within the international community regarding participative approaches. UASWS has been contacted by various institutions (GTZ, UNDP and USAID) to provide trainings, CBNRM expertise and to facilitate participative processes of natural resources management.
Sustainability / perspectives
Regarding the project’s sustainability, capacity building and recognition by international institutions are the main achievements for the UASWS. Local partners benefit from international networking (collaborators of 3 partner institutions have joined IUCN TILCEPA group) and many of them have contacts for new collaborations (mandates or research activities).
