Presentation of Swiss Research Partnership Projects Swiss Universities for Applied Sciences and Swisscontact A development promotion program backed by SDC Project for a Training Course: Subject: Identification of the potential of development of agro-forestry in south western Tanzania Introduction The training course lies within the scope for a diploma at the University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland (UASWS), Lullier. It will be conducted in south-western Tanzania, in the area of Inyonga. The purpose of the training course is to carry out research in the field of the agroforestery, with an aim to preserve the land and the forest solid masses in a sustainable context of development. It includes taking into account the environment, the economic and social characteristics of the area. The framing of the training course will be ensured by the ADAP (Association for the Development of the Protected Areas), the UASWS, Department of Nature Management, as well as the ICRAF (International Center Research for Agronomy and Forestry). Subprojects
Objective The objective is to identify the agro-forestry potential of the region in order to improve the local economy while preserving the environment by diverting the producers of the cultures responsible for the deforestation and the impoverishment of the soil (such as tobacco) as well as poachers. The diversification of the productions will answer various local market demands. In this manner it will be possible to propose a more interesting pallet as regards varieties of products on the market. Methodology The methodology takes as a starting point the methods of rural sociology in order to allow a participative approach in the region. It includes, among other tasks, participating investigations, direct observation and information retrievals. The meetings are open, a broad attention is given to the questions and the speech is encouraged. Process of data acquisition The preliminary study will be done on the basis of library research (theses, studies as well as scientific articles on the subject). The second part of the data collection will be based on interviews with people in Tanzania together with ICRAF. There will be two questionnaires: one intended for the commercial issues (local markets, local trades, hotels, market of tourism) and the other relates to technical issues and local knowledge regarding agro forestry and will be carry among the local producers groups. Analysis and drafting The data resulting from the meetings and questionnaires will be analyzed and a report will be written in which solutions that appear to be the most interesting as well as the techniques necessary for their implementation will be proposed.
