A development promotion program backed by SDC
Land Use management decision support system in the Brazilian Amazonian forest: a WebGIS solution for spatial information dissemination.
Project Country
BRAZIL
Summary of Project
Activities
Implemented
Development of a geodatabase model for IMAZON data.
Research on new technique for enhance the application analysis through Web interfaces.
Training on WebGIS application development
Development of WebGIS for data analysis
Application testing and debugging
Project result dissemination
Goal
Promote sustainable development by disseminating information. Increase the awareness about current anthropogenic pressure upon the Amazonian forest.
Increase the capabilities of monitoring the evolution of the effects caused by human pressure.
Exchange specific knowledge on environmental issues between the two partner.
Set up an innovative and accessible (also in terms of cost) technology capable of performing data analysis.
Results
Expected vs. Results
Achieved by
Swiss Technical University and by Partner
The project results are fully satisfactory.
The technological solutions has been designed, new tools has been developed, and knowledge has been exchanged between the two partners.
The chosen approach to develop new analysis tools, differs from the original proposal. After a deeper analysis of the available data a more effective option was detected (and therefore selected) to fulfil
the project requirements.
The diffusion of the project results, through seminars, conferences and media announcements. It gives to the partners enhanced competence and visibility.
Validation of
Results by Swiss
Technical University and
by Partner
IST considers this project high valuable in terms of scientific content, cooperation experience, and acquired competences.
IMAZON has a new instrument to disseminate the informations that result from complex environmental analysis, to enforce its visibility and concretely help the Amazonian forest conservation.
Sustainability
The project is fully sustainable, thanks to the knowledge transfer and the technology solutions used in the hole project realization.
IMAZON has now the competence to maintain the service and the application, as well as going on developing new features analysis tools.
The maintenance application cost is minimized thanks to the usage of Open Source Software. One of the main advantage reside in the absence of software's licence fee cost. It allows to save more then 20.000 US$ a year.
Project Duration
Approximatively 1 year, from 01.05.2006 to 15.05.2007
