Summary
A humanitarian aid project was initialised and sponsored by the Church of Berne-Jura, the association Verein zur Förderung von Selbsthilfeprojekten von Kirchen und heimgekehrten Flüchtlingen and supported by the Univer-sity of applied sciences in Biel. It was realized last year by Markus Liniger and Gils Glauser in Bata, Equatorial Guinea. Bata is the largest town on Equatorial Guineas mainland with a population of about 80000.
To date, eight computers, an inverter and batteries have been installed. The inverter converts the energy from a battery pack to provide a clean power supply for the computers since the public power supply is very unstable. All PCs are connected through a 10Mbit/s local network and are also connected to the Inter-net. In addition, five young Equatoguineans were instructed on how to maintain and fix hardware problems and how to install and apply software. In two other courses, twenty additional people were instructed in using Windows98 and Word97.
As we are now familiar with the local conditions, we can plan and prepare our support much more efficiently. This year we plan to continue to provide courses in Information Technology. This includes introductions into using applications like Word and Excel and how to use email and Windows. We also plan to further improve the lab energy supply by installing solar panels. The solar energy al-lows the people responsible for the lab to provide regular computer courses with the end goal of becoming financially independent.
In another location about 500 meters away from the computer lab there is a Health Clinic with about 20 rooms. Both the maternal department providing support for mothers giving birth and a department for small surgical treatments are managed by a local nurse. At this Health Clinic we would like to install solar panels to replace a diesel generator which provides energy for the lighting. This is possible by replacing the existing installation of 60Watts bulbs with a new one using 7Watts economic bulbs.
An additional goal for this trip is to educate the people in installing, operating and maintaining renewable energy sources. We will instruct local young people to carry out the practical work.

The computer school is in a room in the I.R.P.G.E. compound.
It is administratively lead by the Secretary-General and Rev. Diana Wright.
The technical responsibility is given to five young Equatorial Guineans which were educated by us last year.
