With its federal mandate, the SNSF is Switzerland’s foremost institution in the promotion of scientific research. It supports research in all disciplines, from philosophy and biology to the nanosciences and medicine. Established in 1952 as a foundation under private law, it has the autonomy it needs to promote independent scientific research. The main task of the SNSF is to evaluate the quality of research proposals submitted by scientists and to provide funding on the basis of priorities and available financial resources.
The SNSF funds research which leads to new knowledge. It also promotes application oriented-research in various scientific fields. The SNSF works to ensure scientific research in Switzerland has the most favourable conditions for developing internationally. It also encourages dialogue among the various social partners and the general public on the impact and effects of research. Regarding research in developing countries, the SNSF funds, together with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the NCCR North-South and a bottom-up programme for Research Partnerships with developing countries. It also supports the International Foundation for Science (IFS).
