Project Description
Background
Research, following the formation of the Directorate of Science and Technology Education (DSTE) showed that one of the main problems and issues hindering Science and Technology education in The Gambia was lack of practical application in Science and Technology and lack of resources for implementing such activities.

As part of a drive to promote technology in education in The Gambia, the Computer Literacy Program was established with an aim of introducing basic computer skills education throughout senior secondary schools.

Goal
The aim of this project is for all Science teachers in Senior Secondary Schools to achieve a certificate of competency in the use of ICT in Science by 2005.

It is hoped that by 2005 training in the use of ICT in Science will be fully integrated into the training programme for Science teachers at Gambia College. However, the final phase of the project will include the development of a policy to ensure that all Science teachers gain certificates of competency and also the development of a policy to ensure continuous updating of ICT-based Science skills.

Method
Fifteen senior secondary schools will be selected for initial inclusion in the project. Two science teachers from each school will take part in the project. These teachers should be from two different science disciplines. The criteria for inclusion will be that the school already has an established computer laboratory and at least one Internet connection in that laboratory.

The end result of the project will be competency certification for the use of ICT in Science teaching for two science teachers from each pilot school.

Final assessment will be by submission of a portfolio of evidence cross- referenced to each section of the list of Competencies and Understandings for the use of ICT in Science. (see attached Guide to Teacher Competencies and Understandings for the use of ICT in Science). Certificates will be awarded to all teachers submitting a complete portfolio of evidence.
