Programme de bourses "Jeunes Chercheurs" Rethinking the Millennium Development Goals: Stakeholders’ Perceptions and Strategic Choices In light of the current economic slowdown, and the heightened debate on the global institutional structure needed to deal with climate change, it is apposite to revisit the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and national priorities through a bottom-up approach. Given that the prospect of achieving most of the MDGs by 2015 looks increasingly difficult, it is crucial that strategic choices are revised realistically and limited resources are allocated ‘optimally’. However the questions of how a country sets and revises its development priorities; and to what extent these priorities are in line with the MDGs are contentious. Hence looking at the political economy of development at the country level, this research project will aim to shed more light on how different groups of stakeholders perceive the MDGs in a broader context of development, how they identify their priorities, and respond to policy trade-offs. The study will involve surveys in seven developing countries from around the world. It is envisioned that the results of the research project will have strong policy relevance and offer recommendations to domestic and international policy makers.
