DISCOURSES ABOUT POVERTY
Latin America and Portuguese-speaking African countries

International and interdisciplinary Symposium

Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verità (Ascona), 13th-18th June 2004
Coordination: Prof. Dr. Martin Lienhard (University of Zurich)

Abstract

What are we talking about when we talk about poverty? Departing from this question, this interdisciplinary symposium - focused on Latin America and Portuguese-speaking African countries - proposes a critical inquiry into poverty discourses produced within the context of the Social Sciences, History, Visual Arts, Literature, Theatre, agencies specialized in the struggle against poverty and within marginalized communities. Bearing in mind relevant and specific social and political contexts, the symposium will discuss not only the changing forms and directions put forward by poverty discourses, but also their ideological premises, their goals and their potential contribution in terms of knowledge and practical intervention. There will be about 30 contributors from Latin America, Portuguese-speaking African countries, Europe and the United States, representing  a broad disciplinary range: Social Sciences, History, Cultural Studies, Literature, Visual Arts and Theatre. Working languages: Spanish and Portuguese.
