Programme de bourses "Echanges Universitaires" Promoting agricultural intensification in Benin: problems and prospects Agricultural intensification is recognized as an important condition for development, though there is no panacea for its practical implementation. The research project is focussing on a interesting approach developed in Benin where ‘centres of rural promotion’ (CPR) were built across the country to support agricultural intensification. Some successes notwith-standing, these centres are struggling nowadays because of a changing environment (i.e. changing donor focuses, liberalization in the agricultural sector) and of conceptual problems. This research project should help to better understand the problems of this approach in order to support a conceptual adaptation improving their effectiveness in contributing to poverty alleviation and improving living conditions. In collaboration with an experienced local research institution (LARES), the conduct of semi-structured interviews with the heads of CPRs, CPR trainees and especially with ex-trainees in combination with fieldwork in rural communities will yield to necessary data. The research project will allow debating this pertinent issue with stakeholders on different levels and to elaborate concrete projects. Daniel Künzler Tél. 00229 30 70 66
