Programme de bourses "Echanges Universitaires" Livestock sector development in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia Contents of the Conference: It was a large round table meeting with a wide audience. At the round table were herders, the Minister of Food and Agriculture and other government representatives, the Dean of the Agricultural University, researchers from the university and organisations, advisers and policy makers. The conference was very interesting and very useful. Overgrazing is a serious problem in Mongolia and consecutive harsh winters have put severe strain on the herders, their income and subsistence. Herders make up one third of the population. Effective measures need to be taken as soon as possible to prevent more economic, social and environmental misfortune and to avert the loss of a sustainable lifestyle, which has the potential to be turned into a more profitable sustainable economic sector. A wide range of opinions was presented, which was indicative of the complexity of the current situation of the pastoral livestock sector in Mongolia. Different priorities and solutions were presented, especially with respect to the optimal livestock numbers. The presentations and discussions of the conference are available on CD ROM and a book with the proceedings (both in English and Mongolian) will be published later this year. Information about the CD ROM and book can directly be obtained from Dr Badarch. In case you have questions related to Mongolian pastoral livestock sector development you can also contact Cecile van Hezik.
