Preparation of a doctoral field research concerning the new management of traditional knowledge in the Andes.

"This stay in Cusco, planed from 20 of September to 9 October 2001, should permit three different activities. First of all, it would allowed Marc Galvin to participate to Colegio Universitario Andino's (Centro Bartolome de las Casas) works during a brief period, related to traditional knowledge management. He would also assist an international congress dedicated to biodiversity management in South America: "Conservation of Biodiversity in the Andes and Amazon Basin - Linking Scientists, NGOs and Local Communities", Cusco (Peru), from September 24 to September 28 . Finalely, it aims to prepare the institutional framework for Mr. Galvin's field work in Peru next year (January 2002 - December 2002), in the context of a scientific partnership between the Graduate Institute for Development Studies (IUED, Geneva) and the Colegio Andino del Centro de Estudios Andinos Bartolome de las Casas (Cusco, Peru).

The preparation of the conditions of a scientific partnership means to: 1. Establish the common interests and objectives of the two parties; 2. Meet several experts at the Conservation of Biodiversity in the Andes and Amazon Basin Congress, in order to develop a network and provide additional support to the research;
3. Confront Mr. Galvin's hypothesis with local experiences and local knowledge;
4. Identify local academic needs that could be supported through a specific collaboration by the IUED. This partnership will be based on the following principles: team work; mutual exchanges of competences and knowledge according to the forces and the weaknesses of each one; joint production of results (articles); connection of Cusco's students with international networks."
