Workshop on Sports Physiotherapy from November 5th to November 9th 2001 in Addis Abeba/ET

In pursuit of the long-term goal of promoting the professional recognition and a future professional education in physiotherapy in Ethiopia, a first Workshop will be held, in response to a request from the Ethiopian Physiotherapy Association.

The present situation in this country shows no professional basic formation. Even the resident physiotherapists are not recognised by the Health Ministry.

Confronted with many primary health care problems, the government is focussing its priorities on epidemiological questions, such as HIV, TB, and Poliomyelit.
There is no understanding for the fundamental character of therapeutic exercises in the case of any affections that reduce individuals’ mobility. The consequences are handicaps, which destroy the individuals’ futures, but often could be avoided with proper therapy.
There is no awareness for the potential effectiveness of physical therapy in this environment.

The workshop aims to teach participants (professionals)
-common injuries of the lower limb in modern athletics
-effective and advanced therapeutic skills
-the role of modern physiotherapy in the treatment of sport injuries
and to share experiences in the management of sports and athletic injuries.

In collaboration with the institute for sports science in Magglingen/Mr. S. Meyer we designed a Five-Day-Workshop, which will be led by four experienced instructors.

This workshop is a first step in the direction of the goal described initially. We hope to improve successfully the government’s awareness of the potential possibilities of modern Physical Therapy – in the field of sports physiotherapy and beyond.
