Programme de bourses "Echanges Universitaires"

Student Exchange Project Portulan

Introduction (abstract)

The department of architecture of the Technical College Zurich (HSZ-T) carried out a project of applied research and development in Havanna. This project was carried out with the co-operation of the Instituto Superior Politécnico José A. Echeverria, La Habana (CUJAE) and was supported by the Swisscontact in 2006/07 (http://www.kfpe.ch/projects/suas/meyer.php - (publication: SI NO SABE NO TE META – Die Suche nach dem Zwischen; © Hochschule für Technik Zürich)

The institutional contact between CUJAE and HSZ-T continued in 2008. Danesa Urquiola Reyes and Angel Michel Domíngue, students of the department of architecture of CUJAE were invited to take part in an exchange term (3 months) by the HSZ-T in Zurich. They were supported by KFPE. During their stay here they visited a selection of regular courses of HSZ-T – design and construction, urban landscape, lay out – in addition to a period of practical instruction, which was done at one of the architect’s offices in Zurich.

The aims of the project

  • Concerning institutional level: build up an exchange programme for the students and the lecturers of the involved  colleges
  • Concerning the participants: build up competence in: specialized knowledge of architecture, the methodology of design, co-operation taking into account the cultural differences, independence
  • Prospective: the drafting of a new project for research as a sequence of the project Portulan ( see above)

Project valuation

The aims of the project could be fulfilled both on the institutional level and from the point of view of the participants. It is not yet been decided whether and in which form it might be possible to develop a new common research project.
The study visit was carried out without any problems at all, due to the fact that each single student and teacher had already a personal contact during the common work at the research project “Portulan”.
The combination between a “part-time study” and a practical “part-time work” proved to be a success. In this way the students were able to see into the outline of the profession of the Swiss architect as a career.
During their stay here the Cuban students could improve considerably their specialist knowledge, however a much longer stay would be necessary for the foreign students to catch up with the specialist knowledge that we expect from our students.
The exchange programme between the involved colleges should be continued.
