Postgraduate studies in hydraulic schemes
September 2001 July 2003, Lausanne, Switzerland
After the successful first edition with about 30 participants from more than ten different countries, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) in collaboration with the ETH-Zurich, and in partnership with the universities of Munich, Innsbruck and Liège as well as the "Institut national polytechnique" in Grenoble, is organising the second session of the Postgraduate studies in hydraulic schemes.
The aim of the postgraduate cycle, based on a global vision, is to acquire a very high technical qualification in different fields of applications in hydraulic engineering as well as to master the socio-economic and ecological aspects of a project. Special attention will be given to the acquired competences in Alpine regions regarding the use of hydropower and flood protection, skills recognised world-wide and applied with success by many engineering companies in their international business. After having successfully completed our course of study, a participant should be qualified to assume the function of chief project engineer of hydraulic multiple purpose projects, able to deal with a large range of activities covering the whole life cycle of hydraulic schemes, including design, construction, maintenance and exploitation.
The course is composed of eight modules (isolated modules, valid for continuing education, can be followed) covering the following topics:
- Water resources and supply
- Integrated conception and impact of hydraulic schemes
- Design and construction of hydraulic schemes and dams
- Hydroelectric powerplants
- River training works and flood management
- Water supply, drainage and sewerage in urban areas
- Economy, planning and project management
- Revitalisation of river courses and biotechnical engineering
The program of approximately 600 hours of lectures during two years ends with the completion of a Master's project. The successful participant will obtain a postgraduate diploma delivered jointly by the EPFL and the ETHZ. In order to encourage the participation of active professionals, the course is organised on a regular part time basis i.e. one day per week, 38 weeks per year. For candidates without a professional activity, a limited number of remunerative training courses can be obtained from the Course Management.
