Popular Media, Music and Performance in South and West Africa

Abstract
This is a project of cooperation between the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg and the Department of History at the University of Basel as a member of the Centre of African Studies Basel. It consists in the exchange of staff and the joint teaching of two related courses by Prof. David Coplan and Veit Arlt. The first course is on popular media and performance and will be taught at the University of the Witwatersrand in February and March 2005. The second is a comparative course on the The Popular Music Cultures of Africa: Past and Present and will be taught at the University of Basel in April and May 2005. The special value of this cooperation lies in its interdisciplinary character, the comparative trans-regional approach, and the emphasis on the use of primary documents.
