Food and Nutrition Bulletin (Volume 32, Number 3, September 2011)
Special Section: Assessing the Impact of Micronutrient Interventions under Special Circumstances Such as Refugee Camps and Emergency Operations
A special section of the Food and Nutrition Bulletin co-edited by the World Food Programme, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Sight and Life, shares important deliberations, practical experiences and lessons learnt from scaled-up micronutrient powder (MNP) interventions.
One topic of focus is the selection of impact indicators and the ability to evaluate the impact of interventions. Numerous possible evaluation designs are discussed and recommendations are given.
Also included in this section are papers on three specific home fortification experiences and outcome studies in different settings – This is a must-read for those that are working in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs being moved to scale.

New Publications by the NCCR North-South
Regional Policy Briefs
The NCCR North-South has published three new regional editions of evidence for policy:
Sustainable sanitation in urban centres in Southeast Asia
The current system of centralised wastewater management as practised in many Southeast Asian cities is not successful due to the high costs of construction and maintenance, say NCCR North-South researchers. Instead, they propose treating wastewater in a decentralised way by introducing simple but effective and affordable technologies that can be maintained at community level.
Safe use of wastewater in agriculture and aquaculture – Agriculture and aquaculture in Vietnam often use wastewater, particularly in urban or peri-urban areas. This issue of evidence for policy explores how wastewater can be used safely and beneficially (plus a Vietnamese Version).
Addressing issues and concerns of Internally Displaced Persons in Nepal The plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) is a major global challenge. To date, interventions for IDPs largely obey the “basic needs” framework of humanitarian agencies. But this often overlooks the heterogeneity of IDPs and the actual support they require. This policy brief outlines ways of designing more suitable interventions, by paying attention to local contexts and analysing IDPs’ livelihoods from a broader socio-economic perspective.
All regional policy briefs are available for download here
Outcome Highlights
Microbial risk assessment (MRA) is the topic of the latest edition of Outcome Highlights, NCCR North-South’s series of concise information sheets on effective collaborations between researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and local communities. MRA is still at a very early stage of development in Vietnam. With its rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural development, and population growth, Vietnam faces increasing risks from pathogens contaminating its water and food supply. This Outcome Highlights describes development of an MRA training course tackling issues of water, sanitation, and food safety. ''Microbial risk assessment in Vietnam: Water, sanitation, and food safety – from training to policy'' is available here
Two new papers in the Dialogue Series
A group of NCCR North-South researchers and their partners in Vietnam issued a Glossary of Terms in Water Supply and Sanitation (in Vietnamese) on the occasion of the World Toilet Day (19 November). This glossary is part of a transdisciplinary project aiming at promoting sustainable sanitation in Vietnam. Another product of activities by an NCCR North-South research group is the recent paper by Sagar Raj Sharma entitled Miles to Go Before We Sleep: Poverty and the Millennium Development Goals in Nepal. This paper belongs to a collection of reports on the MDGs in India, Nepal, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Switzerland.
